My Best Novella Collection and Speculative Reads of 2019

I am finally on my last list of Best Reads of 2019. I don't say that in a 'Whew, it's over!' it's more of a 'Oh, my goodness, this was so hard!' attitude. I wish I could've just chosen ten books but then so many wouldn't have been highlighted and they definitely deserved to be highlighted!

NOVELLA COLLECTIONS

SPECULATIVE

David Rawlings really touched this reader's heart when he took the comments I made right after reading his book and made this cool graphic.

I hope you've had some fun as you've followed my Best Reads of 2019 posts. I've enjoyed looking back and remembering each of these stories and how they touched my heart as I read them. Hang on tight, because I've seen some of the books coming out in 2020 and I am going to make a very strong prediction that they are going to be as wonderful if not more amazing than the books of 2019!!

In case you missed my other Best of 2019 lists you can check them out from the links below.

Top Ten Tuesday - Inspirational Spooky Reads

Welcome to another edition of Top Ten Tuesday hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Today's topic is a Halloween Freebie. Normally, when we think of spooky, creepy reads Stephen King comes to mind but there are actually some fabulous spooky, creepy reads in Inspirational fiction.

http://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/covers/9781400074563.gif

I read this book in 2009 and it continues to stick with me. Susan Meissner writes a historical time slip novel that is both present day and the 1600's. It gives a huge eye opener to the Salem Witch Trial period.

Ted Dekker is known for books that have a supernatural element to them but in this book he teams up with his daughter and the spooky level is heightened.

This book by Siri Mitchell isn't so much creepy and spooky as it is real. The scary part about this book is how well the truth is perceived as a lie and a lie is perceived as the truth.

I haven't read this book yet, but I've been hearing loads about it and the different layers within the story. Especially, the old mansion that is in the story and dreams that become nightmares.

Like Ted Dekker, Tosca Lee has a element of supernatural within the story and this book has it in spades. If you haven't read it you definitely need to!

I just got this book and the back cover copy is beyond freaky but one that is doable. I'm not one that likes to be scared out of my wits but I enjoy the thrill of being scared a little.

Mike Dellosso has studied Frank Peretti well because this book has the same feel as any of Peretti's books.

If you need a reason to know why prayer is the biggest weapon we as believer's have you must read this book!

Not a spooky read in the least but a definite fun one!

I adore this book! It was a gift to my children and I must of read it hundreds of times to them. The beauty of this book is that it shows God's love for us and the message of salvation.

Even though I haven't read two of the books listed these books are all inspirational and clean.

Now, it's your turn . . . what book's are your Halloween favorites? Tell me in the comments.

My Thoughts:

This was an interesting book to say the least. There is a cult like feel to the book with a lot of rule following and fear. **You think it will save you, but fear can't save you. Only love can, and God is love. You can choose the light, which shows itself as love, or you can choose darkness, which shows itself as fear. Not both.**

There is a lot of symbolism throughout the book that in my opinion could mean different things to different people. Which makes this book a soul searching and thought provoking book.

The quote below really sums up what the book is about. It's about how our fears can overtake us as believer's and can completely rule us.

"My Fury didn't have faces, but if they did, they would all be versions of me, and for the first time I truly understood them for what they were. My self-pity, my anxiousness, my anger, my hopelessness, my judgment, my self-criticism, my worthlessness, my victim-hood, my self-righteousness, my disapproval of others, my fear of being deceived, my need to control any situation, my guilt . . . "

The character's are well crafted and believable as well as the world that was created for them. I think the Dekker's are a great father and daughter duo writing team. I'd love to read another book by them.

Great job, guys!

Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book via the publisher. I was not required to write a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

First Line Friday ; Featuring The Girl Behind the Red Rope

Happy Friday!! I have been so excited about this book! I think it would be so incredibly fun to write a book with your NY Times best selling author, dad. Which is exactly what Rachelle Dekker did! I've just started this book and it is both haunting and eerie. But, not in a creepy way.

Welcome to another edition of First line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books. So, pick up the book closest to you and leave a comment with the first line. Today's first line is from The Girl Behind the Red Rope by Ted Dekker and Rachelle Dekker.

Today's first line:

It was hot that day in the hills of Tennessee. I remember because the aged boards that made up the tiny church's floor creaked with every step. As if to say, I'm tired of all you meat sacks treading on me. Be still.

See what I mean. Just a little creepy. I enjoy reading creepy, eerie books in the fall.

When Through Waters Deep by Rachelle Dekker

About the book:

Alicen McCaffrey finally has the life her mother always dreamed for her: beautiful home in Santa Monica, successful husband, adorable daughter. Then tragedy blows her carefully assembled facade to pieces. Worse yet--Alicen feels solely responsible. At rock bottom, she decides to accompany a childhood friend back to Red Lodge, Montana, where they spent summers together as kids.
The peaceful mountain landscape, accented with lush forests and small-town charm, brings back happy memories of time spent with her beloved, eccentric Grandma Josephine. Alicen begins to hope that perhaps things could be different here. Perhaps the oppressive guilt will lift--if only for a moment.
But when Alicen starts hearing voices and seeing mysterious figures near the river in the woods, she begins to fear she's completely lost her sanity, as it's rumored her grandmother did. Or might there be more to Red Lodge than meets the eye? Could the voices and visions be real--and her only means of finding the healing she so desperately needs? Or will they prove to be her final undoing?

My Thoughts:

This is one of my least favorite things to do, write a review for a book I just couldn't finish. When I was working on my Top Ten Tuesday post for tomorrow, I thought of this book because it falls in the spooky theme of my post and realized I hadn't reviewed it. I was definitely avoiding it.

The moment I saw the cover I wanted to read it. Being a huge fan of her father, Ted Dekker's writing, and the book having a super-natural theme made the book a must read for me.

I stopped reading a few chapters after the tragedy happened. For me there were too many signs that it was going to happen, and I had a hard time getting back into the book at that point.

Even though I didn't read all of it, Ms. Dekker's descriptive prose brings you right into the emotions of the story.

Please do not go on my take only. Several other readers have read and loved the book. And this reader is going to give it another try.
