So many times I approached life with with a virtual roll of yellow duct tape emblazoned with the word NEVER. Over and over again I sealed off certain opportunities.
I would never marry a doctor or anyone in the military.
I would never have children.
I would never write fiction.
And don’t you know God stripped off the duct tape and walked me through each of those NEVER doors?
Have you ever marked a door NEVER … only to discover his best waited where you said you’d never go?
Following God through that door doesn’t mean we’re on “easy street,”‘even though we’re where he wants us to be.

My Thoughts
Sisters! With each book of this series Ms. Vogt evokes a roller coaster of emotions. These Thatcher sisters are flawed, real, and frustrating. As a mother of three daughters I have watched my girls love each other and hate each other at the same time. I say that to say that Beth Vogt's characters are real on every level and these sisters are learning how to navigate the waters of being adults not only as sisters but with the disappointments and trials life brings.
Even with all the heartbreaking situations that Ms. Vogt puts her characters in she weaves a thread of hope throughout the entire story.
One of the best quotes from the book comes from Jillian's friend Harper . . . It’s not about breast cancer….Or anything else that might happen.”…”That’s not the common ground you stand on. You love Geoff. He loves you. That’s your common ground. And nothing else– …should ever come between you.
How many times do we allow ourselves to get caught up in the circumstances of life and totally forget the common ground we stand on.
I am sad to see this series come to an end. It feels like saying good-bye to dear friends. If you enjoy books with real characters dealing with real life issues that gives hope then you need to read this series!  This finale can standalone but I highly recommend reading the first two books in the series first.

As sparks fly between her and Hollis, Emily is drawn to island life, even as she uncovers shocking secrets about the tragic accident that led to her mother's death. My Thoughts:

In her new novel, If for Any Reason, Courtney Walsh takes us to Nantucket island. Whether a small town like Harbor Pointe or the island of Nantucket, Ms. Walsh creates an adventure of the heart, soul, and family.

Emily and Hollis are imperfect people with complicated pasts that are littered with mistakes and regrets. They long for just a moment of knowing they're doing something right.

Throughout the story Ms. Walsh's love for the theater comes through the heroine, Emily Ackerman, is a former Broadway performer.

While this is a contemporary romance read, Ms. Walsh has placed a time-slip element through secondary character's Isabella and JD. I am a huge time-slip fan so I love seeing it pop up in a book.

I love the letters Isabella wrote to Emily. They gave the novel Isabella's story. As a mom and daughter, I think handwritten letters is the most precious gift a mother could give her daughter.

My bottom line . .

This is a book that you'll think about not only as you read but after you've turned the last page. I enjoyed every minute I spent in Nantucket getting to know Hollis, Emily and Jolie. Go take a vacation to Nantucket. You won't regret it!

The Solid Grounds Coffee Company (The Saturday Night Supper Club #3) by Carla Laureano - Reviewed

About the book:

Title: The Solid Grounds Coffee Company
Author: Carla Laureano
Series: The Saturday Night Supper Club #3
Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers

Analyn Sanchez can handle the long hours and arrogant clients that come with her job as a crisis management associate at Denver's largest publicity firm. The high-powered job, expensive condo, and designer wardrobe are all part of her plan to prove to her family that her life choices haven't been in vain. But when she's asked to cover up a client's misdeeds with serious moral and legal ramifications, she can no longer sacrifice her conscience for her career . . . and the cost is no less than her job.

Ever since a devastating climbing accident in South America eight months ago, and a bad decision that dried up his sponsorships, professional rock climber Bryan Shaw has found himself at similar loose ends. When the opportunity to buy a coffee farm in Colombia arises, he jumps on it--only to discover his wandering ways have left him utterly unprepared to run a business.

When Bryan returns home and offers Ana a role in his company as a solution to both their problems, she's desperate enough to consider working with the far-too-flippant and far-too-handsome climber, even though he's the polar opposite of her type A nature. As they delve deeper into the business, however, she begins to suspect there's much more to Bryan than she's given him credit for . . . and that sometimes the best plans are the ones you never see coming.

My Thoughts

I wish this series could go on forever! I am so sad that The Saturday Night Supper Club series has come to an end with the release of The Solid Grounds Coffee Company today. With that said this book is a perfect ending to an absolutely wonderful series.

Ms. Laureano shows her research skills in the description of how coffee beans are roasted. It was so interesting to learn about the process.

Until reading this book I had no idea that there were cocaine farms in Columbia being turned into coffee bean farms. I love this idea and think that it is a beautiful way to turn something evil into something lovely.

The friendship between Melody, Rachel and Ana is one of those relationships that endure the test of time with life changes and realistic struggles.

The banter between Ana and Bryan is fun. Both Ana and Bryan have baggage, and baggage they're not proud of. Bryan's is out in the open, Ana keeps hers close to the vest. Yet, little by little Ana trusts Bryan and the wall she's built to protect her begins to fall away.

The faith message Ms. Laureano weaves throughout the story is one that we all struggle with. Why do bad things happen to people whose faith and trust is in God. She doesn't sugar coat it she shows that life is messy, things don't always go like we hoped or planned.

This series is Carla Laureano at her best! I highly recommend reading the series in order.

HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY, Carla Laureano!!!

My Thoughts:

Like the first book in the series, Things I Never Told You, this book grabbed at my heart. My heart broke and in Ms. Vogt's unique way was put back together again.

Families are complicated and there is no other more complicated relationship than that of siblings. It's raw, real, and can change in a matter of minutes. I didn't grow up with sisters, I had a younger brother, and our relationship is complicated. I did, however raise three girls and I have a front row seat to how complicated and intricate these relationships are.

The push and pull of disappointments, struggles, and emotional baggage individually and with each of the sister's is real, raw, and palpable. Several times while reading I wanted to reach through the pages and smack them all. Which is what good fiction does to a reader. Making you care about each of the characters and the turmoil of a situation they are in.

I enjoyed every part of this book even the parts that made me crazy. I have fallen in love with Johanna, Jillian and Peyton and their stories both individually and collectively. I also walked away from this story with hope. Hope that even in our struggles, disappointments, and pain God sees all of it and He's right there with us. Something we all need not forget.

After reading book one in the series, Things I Never Told You, I was completely invested. I am now anxious for Johanna's story.

Contemporary Women's Fiction is a genre that is known for it's emotional, relational ties and Ms. Vogt is making a name for herself within this genre. And I for one am anxious to see where her writing goes from here.

My Thoughts:

This is a bookish culinary readers delight! You know when you go to a friend's house for dinner and they've got a beautiful spread you smell before you enter the house and then your eyes are overwhelmed with the beauty of the feast in front of you, this is exactly what reading this book is like. It also made me want to attempt to make macrons and other culinary masterpieces.

Having lived in Colorado as a child, the setting of the book, it was fun visiting places I am familiar with as I read.

The main character, Melody is faced with unexpected dilemma's right off the bat that begins the conflict, and then in comes a pilot. I tell you, the romantic attraction was instant and perfect in so many ways.

I have been a fan of Carla Laureano's since I read and reviewed her debut novel, Five Days in Skye back in 2013. With each book I enjoy her writing more and more. Her characters are real and believable, the conflict is something you can identify with, and she weaves faith throughout the story.

I thoroughly enjoyed the friendship aspect of Ana, Rachel, and Melody. Having a tribe of friends who walk with you through good and bad makes life bearable.

This book is a masterpiece of culinary delight! I highly recommend it!

My Thoughts:

This is one of my least favorite things to do, write a review for a book I just couldn't finish. When I was working on my Top Ten Tuesday post for tomorrow, I thought of this book because it falls in the spooky theme of my post and realized I hadn't reviewed it. I was definitely avoiding it.

The moment I saw the cover I wanted to read it. Being a huge fan of her father, Ted Dekker's writing, and the book having a super-natural theme made the book a must read for me.

I stopped reading a few chapters after the tragedy happened. For me there were too many signs that it was going to happen, and I had a hard time getting back into the book at that point.

Even though I didn't read all of it, Ms. Dekker's descriptive prose brings you right into the emotions of the story.

Please do not go on my take only. Several other readers have read and loved the book. And this reader is going to give it another try.

My Thoughts:

Sandra Byrd has been a favored author since I read her Tudor series years ago. She has now ventured out into Gothic romance, adding mystery to her ever growing repertoire.

Lady of a Thousand Treasures is book one in her new series The Victorian Ladies. In this book Ms. Byrd places her heroine in quite the predicament. She is alone with a family business to run and must decide whether every piece in Baron Lydney's collection is authentic. With each piece Eleanor finds herself challenged and in more of a quandary than at the beginning.

This book is full of twists and turns that kept me guessing. Ms. Byrd's detailed description of each treasured piece evokes the reader to see the piece through their mind's eye. The romance was subtle, moved at an even pace yet very engaging.

My Bottom Line:

Lady of a Thousand Treasures is an exquisite book that is to be savored not devoured. The reader will feel as though they are viewing each beautiful treasure with Eleanor, and trying to figure out if it is real or not. The faith element is placed perfectly throughout the story teaching Eleanor to trust God not herself, and realize that she's never alone. I highly recommended!

It's been ten years since Payton Thatcher's twin sister died in an accident, leaving the entire family to cope in whatever ways they could. They can only hope that a wedding might be just the occasion to heal the resentment and jealousy that divides them . . . until a frightening diagnosis threatens Jillian's plans and her future. Following God through that door doesn’t mean we’re on “easy street,”‘even though we’re where he wants us to be.

My Thoughts:

Beth K. Vogt’s new release The Things I Never Told You is reminiscent of Jodi Picoult. So, if you are a fan of Jodi Picoult then you will love this book!

I don’t have sisters except for the close friends I’ve chosen as sisters, however, I raised three girls and have seen the dynamics of sisters for thirty years. They can’t stand each other one minute, love each other the next, won't talk to each other, but bottom line they are each other’s best friend and secret keepers.

Ms. Vogt shows the true push and pull between sisters. In addition to showing people and relationships are like individual pieces of a mirror alone yet when formed together make a beautiful colorful mandala like one you’d see in a kaleidoscope.

Each of the sisters are complex, dealing with real life situations that could happen to anyone of us. The supporting cast of characters complete the family dynamic. The story moves along at a nice pace revealing bits and pieces of the plot that keeps you guessing until the last page.

My Bottom Line:

This book is about relationships, tragedy, pain, and forgiveness not only of others but of self. The story just grabbed me from the beginning and I became completely immersed into the lives and stories of the characters. There were moments that made me think, when I wanted to throw the book against the wall, cry, and yes laugh.
Things I Never Told You has everything that makes women’s fiction readable and engaging.

Highly recommended!

 About the book:

Title: The Masterpiece
Author: Francine Rivers
Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers
Genre: Christian Contemporary Romance

New York Times bestselling author Francine Rivers returns to her romance roots with this unexpected and redemptive love story, a probing tale that reminds us that mercy can shape even the most broken among us into an imperfect yet stunning masterpiece.

The demons of Roman’s past seem to echo through the halls of his empty mansion and out across his breathtaking Topanga Canyon view. Like Roman, Grace is wrestling with ghosts and secrets of her own. After a disastrous marriage threw her life completely off course, she vowed never to let love steal her dreams again. But as she gets to know the enigmatic man behind the reputation, it’s as if the jagged pieces of both of their pasts slowly begin to fit together . . . until something so unexpected happens that it changes the course of their relationship―and both their lives―forever.

My Thoughts:

Without sounding cliche, this book is truly a masterpiece. I thoroughly enjoyed the art angle, and the placing of the story in Topanga Canyon was a lot of fun for me. I've been by the canyon several times so I could visualize the area.

Ms. Rivers creates flawed characters who are hurting, hiding secrets, and battling their own private ghosts. Within the 496 pages of this book we watch a masterpiece created from rubble. Which mirrors exactly what Christ does in our own personal walk with Him. It was beautiful to see broken,  hurting people change as well as encouraging my own heart at how He continues to take my brokenness and make me more like Him.

My Bottom Line:

Reading this book was like seeing a beautiful painting, and sitting at the beach watching the tide come in. At first you may only see one color, but as you look more and more is revealed to show the true masterpiece. I have enjoyed every book of Ms. Rivers' that I have read, and this book is one of my favorites.
I have to say the cover was a big pull for me to read it. I love the graffiti design of it.

I do recommend this book.
