The Ark and the Dove (The Story of Noah's Wife) by Jill Eileen Smith Reviewed

About the book:

Title: The Ark and the Dove (The Story of Noah's Wife)

Author: Jill Eileen Smith

Genre: Historical Biblical Christian Fiction

Zara and Noah have walked together with the Creator for their entire lives, and they have done their best in an increasingly wicked and defiant world to raise their three sons to follow in their footsteps. It has been a challenge--and it's about to get much, much harder.

When the Creator tells her husband to build an ark to escape the coming wrath against the sins of humankind, Zara steps out with him in faith. But the derision and sabotage directed their way from both friends and extended family are difficult to bear, as is knowing that everyone she interacts with beyond her husband, her sons, and their wives is doomed to destruction. And when the ark is finally finished and the animals have been shut up inside, Zara and her family embark on an adventure that will test their patience and their faith as they await deliverance and dry ground.

Experience the story of Noah and the flood like you never have before. With bestselling and award-winning author Jill Eileen Smith as your guide, you'll never look at a rainbow the same way again.

Goodreads || Baker Book House || Amazon || Barnes & Noble

My Thoughts:

Close your eyes and imagine watching animals walking up a ramp two by two into an ark that can not only hold elephants, giraffes, hippos, and lions; but also your family.

We've heard and read the story of Noah and the ark, there was even a toy ark with animals when my girls were kids, but we've never heard the story of Noah's wife; now we have one.

With her amazing research and imaginative skill for the first time, we have a story about the woman who stood by Noah during the heckling he received while building the ark and endured the time spent on the ark.

Ms. Smith takes us both inside the ark and the family dynamics of Noah's family. And boy were there a lot of family dynamics; mainly between the wives of Shem, Japheth, and Ham.

Reading about the ark's interior with not only sleeping and eating quarters but pens for the animals, feeding, and waste management systems was absolutely fascinating.

I felt Zara's frustration with her three daughters-in-law and her sons. Being a Mama is hard at times and we see her struggle.

I love biblical fiction for a lot of reasons, the main reason is I am always pulled back to the Bible story. Last night as I was finishing I re-read the passage in Genesis 6:20-29 where Ham humiliates his father. I never really understood that, but Ms. Smith wrote it beautifully. It was sad as well.

Bottom Line:

This is a beautiful story about Zara, Noah's wife, and her children. The struggle is everyone's struggle. Learning to walk by faith is not new and we see that in this beautiful story.

A couple of my favorite quotes:

"I should not doubt. The Creator may not speak to us in an audible voice or fill our dreams with visions, but He speaks in His creation. He speaks to our conscience what is true and good and what is a lie and evil. If we seek Him, we will not be easily deceived."

"To think that the Creator is not able to do something different than what has always been done is arrogant because it puts us above Him."

The Warsaw Sisters by Amanda Barratt Reviewed

About the book:

Title: The Warsaw Sisters
Author: Amanda Barratt
Genre: Christian Historical Fiction
Pages: 369
Publisher: Revell

On a golden August morning in 1939, sisters Antonina and Helena DÄ…browska send their father off to defend Poland against the looming threat of German invasion. The next day, the first bombs fall on Warsaw, decimating their beloved city and shattering the world of their youth.

When Antonina's beloved Marek is forced behind ghetto walls along with the rest of Warsaw's Jewish population, Antonina turns her worry into action and becomes a key figure in a daring network of women risking their lives to shelter Jewish children. Helena finds herself drawn into the ranks of Poland's secret army, joining the fight to free her homeland from occupation. But the secrets both are forced to keep threaten to tear the sisters apart--and the cost of resistance proves greater than either ever imagined.

Shining a light on the oft-forgotten history of Poland during WWII and inspired by true stories of ordinary individuals who fought to preserve freedom and humanity in the darkest of times, The Warsaw Sisters is a richly rendered portrait of courage, sacrifice, and the resilience of our deepest ties.

My Thoughts:

"Grief was a blade, slicing deep, cutting your heart to shreds. With time, the blade grew dull, your heart numb. But you still bled."

With her signature style, Amanda Barratt takes a historical story and puts flesh on it, binding it together with two sisters who have one another. I was pulled into the story immediately and felt the relationship between Antonina and Helena through the pages.

This is a must-read story! It vividly shows the horror of occupied Poland during WWII. Revealing the courage and determination of two sisters who refuse to be controlled by anyone but God.

Amanda Barratt's attention to detail and research is evident on each page.

The bestselling and award-winning queen of romantic suspense is back with a brand-new series that will get your adrenaline pumping as you burn through the pages to discover the truth.

My Thoughts

It's been a long time since I've read an Irene Hannon novel, and while I have missed her stories, I am glad I started out with a new series. So, many times I've requested a review copy only to find out that it's book two or three. I will say that most of Revell's authors are really good at making each book in a series stand alone. I'm just a reader who wants to read each of them and in order.

Irene Hannon is an author who can keep a reader glued to the page. I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out who the bad guy was. She definitely knows how to keep a reader guessing who the bad guy is. And even when you find out who the bad guy is it literally blows your mind. I was really upset at who the bad guy was, which shows that Ms. Hannon creates characters that a reader will connect with and care about. Which is what good authors do.

I read this book in a day which was fun since I haven't done that in ages.

The Rose and the Thistle by Laura Frantz Reviewed

About the book:

Title: The Rose and the Thistle

Author: Laura Frantz

Genre: Inspirational Historical Romance

In 1715, Lady Blythe Hedley's father is declared an enemy of the British crown because of his Jacobite sympathies, forcing her to flee her home in northern England. Secreted to the tower of Wedderburn Castle in Scotland, Lady Blythe awaits who will ultimately be crowned king. But in a house with seven sons and numerous servants, her presence soon becomes known.

No sooner has Everard Hume lost his father, Lord Wedderburn, than Lady Hedley arrives with the clothes on her back and her mistress in tow. He has his own problems--a volatile brother with dangerous political leanings, an estate to manage, and a very young brother in need of comfort and direction in the wake of losing his father. It would be best for everyone if he could send this misfit heiress on her way as soon as possible.

Drawn into a whirlwind of intrigue, shifting alliances, and ambitions, Lady Blythe must be careful whom she trusts. Her fortune, her future, and her very life are at stake. Those who appear to be adversaries may turn out to be allies--and those who pretend friendship may be enemies.

Goodreads || Amazon || Baker Book House

My Thoughts

Laura Frantz is the Queen of 18th-century writing. I have been a fan since I read The Frontiersman's Daughter in 2009. Her prose and research are sublime and have become something this reader has come to enjoy with each new book.

While her stories have stayed close to home here in America this year she wrote about a Scottish rogue in a Scottish castle. Everard is the perfect Scottish swoony hero and Blythe is the perfect English heroine. A rose to his thistle, in so many ways.

There is something so swoon-worthy and comforting about a man who has a quiet inner faith like Everard. While we see his baroque-ness in the book it's his faith that really stands out.

I adored Blythe. Her frustration about being hidden away and worry about her father during this Jacobite time were real and palpable on the page.

Everard's youngest brother, Orin, who Blythe tutors is a sweet addition to the cast of characters.

This book is beautifully layered from the moment we meet Blythe to the last word. It is richly detailed in not only the Scottish Lowlands but both the English and French countryside. Within those layers, Ms. Frantz includes family, political, and romantic tensions that keep the reader glued to the page. Reading her Author's Note at the end of the book makes the book a more personal read.

I am always excited to read a new release by Laura Frantz and always sad when it ends.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book via the publisher. I was not required to write a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

About Laura Frantz:

I was born and raised in Kentucky, living first in Ashland, Mammoth Cave, Bowling Green, and then Lexington. But my heart has always been in Berea, Madison County, the place my family has resided since the 18th-century. I came to know Christ there at the age of 12, was baptized, and spent my childhood roaming through the woods and swimming in the rivers of my books.

My earliest memories are of the public library, standing in front of shelves filled with those little biographies of famous historical figures like Daniel Boone and George Washington and Sacajawea. I began scribbling stories at age 7 and thankfully never stopped. My passion then and now is history and all the wonders of past centuries.

I attended college at Denison University in Ohio and also in England, living in a manor/castle and studying the American Revolution from the British perspective. Shakespeare and 18th-century literature form the backbone of my English degree. Strangely enough, I only took one creative writing class.

It was never a desire of mine to be published. I simply love to write for the sheer joy of writing – and that was enough. But as Proverbs 16:9 says, “The heart of a man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

I hope my books bless you.

Hadley Beckett's Next Dish by Bethany Turner

About the book:

Title: Hadley Beckett's Next Dish
Author: Bethany Turner
Publisher: Revell

Celebrity chef Maxwell Cavanaugh is known for many things: his multiple Michelin stars, his top-rated Culinary Channel show To the Max, and most of all his horrible temper. Hadley Beckett, host of the Culinary Channel's other top-rated show, At Home with Hadley, is beloved for her Southern charm and for making her viewers feel like family.

When Max experiences a very public temper tantrum, he's sent packing to get his life in order. When he returns, career in shambles, his only chance to get back on TV and in the public's good graces is to work alongside Hadley.

As these polar-opposite celeb chefs begin to peel away the layers of public persona and reputation, they will not only discover the key ingredients for getting along, but also learn the secret recipe for unexpected forgiveness . . . and maybe even love. In the meantime, hide the knives.

Fan-favorite Bethany Turner serves up a heaping helping of humor and romance with this thoroughly modern story centered on cooking, enemies, and second chances.

You can purchase a copy HERE

About Bethany Turner:

Bethany was born in the 1970's (but just barely!) and was influenced greatly by the pop culture of the 1980's. She is the wife of an amazing guy she met online in the 1990's, the mother of two amazing sons, and the creator of a fictional character named Sarah Hollenbeck, who introduced herself to her in the 2010's.
In 2014 she walked away from her career in bank management, and that meant walking away from security, and not just financial security (though that was no small concern, I assure you!).
Since then, God has taken her life and turned it into a living representation of His promise which is found in Ephesians 3:20. He truly is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine!

You can connect with Bethany on these social media platforms.

My Thoughts

I met Bethany Turner a year ago and I immediately knew I needed to read her books.

In Hadley Beckett's Next Dish, I found myself laughing out loud, trying to giggle quietly while my husband slept, and thinking about new recipes I wanted to try in my kitchen.

In Bethany Turner style the book is filled with witty banter, a spunky heroine, romantic chemistry - and some not so romantic chemistry. An absolute fabulous array for a contemporary romance!

Redeemable characters are a favorite of mine and especially hero's. I literally could not stand Max at the beginning yet Bethany Turner made me love him at the end. I love when an author makes a character so unlikable and redeems them throughout the story.

Highly recommended!

My Thoughts:

I've been enjoying Sarah Sundin's WWII novels since I read Wings of Glory in 2010. Ms. Sundin's knowledge and story telling of our American forces during the WWII era is unmatched.

Although I am sad to see this series end, The Land Beneath Us was a perfect conclusion to the Sunrise at Normandy series.

Ms. Sundin uses the biblical story of Rachel and Leah to bring the faith element to life. Making the story more than just a transport back to the Normandy of WWII.

Clay and Leah have to be one of my favorite bookish couples. I loved how Ms. Sundin wove in Leah's own adoption story, and her own dilemma of whether or not to choose adoption. It was touching and brought memories of what my own birth mother might have gone through.

While I have loved every book in the Sunrise at Normandy series I believe this one is my favorite!

I highly recommend this book!

My Thoughts:

WOW! Another action packed, adrenaline rush, adventure by the Queen of Rescue Romantic Suspense! Yes, I just created that title. 😉😉

Ms. Warren constantly places her characters in peril and wraps their physical peril around an internal one that she has them struggling with. Having SEAL's, Air Force para rescue jumpers as character's who have jobs that force them to be brave, yet on the inside they're not and they're carrying around pain from their past. That's just a small example found within the pages of this book.

No matter what the adventure, or peril, you can count on Ms. Warren to always have God's love and hope woven through every piece of the story. Giving the reader life lesson nuggets to think about.

If you've not read a book by Susan May Warren, what are you waiting for?!? This is a brand new series so start NOW!!!

I highly recommend this book!

Laura Frantz brings the 1770's to life in a very real way. With her vivid imagery and storytelling Ms. Frantz has created real, believable characters and their world of fort life in 1770 Virginia to life on every page.
The budding romance between Tessa and Clay is swoon-worthy and shows Laura Frantz's talent at her finest.Tessa's desire for a flounced petty coat at the opening in the book just shows her sweetness. Clay was the perfect hero for this story. His care for not just Tessa but the entire Swan family was endearing.
While I wanted to read this quickly the moment I received it, I wasn't able to because of the holidays and it turned out for the best because this book is meant to be savored.
As with all of Laura Frantz's books the faith element is perfectly placed and sinks right into the reader's heart.

My Thoughts:

This was an interesting book to say the least. There is a cult like feel to the book with a lot of rule following and fear. **You think it will save you, but fear can't save you. Only love can, and God is love. You can choose the light, which shows itself as love, or you can choose darkness, which shows itself as fear. Not both.**

There is a lot of symbolism throughout the book that in my opinion could mean different things to different people. Which makes this book a soul searching and thought provoking book.

The quote below really sums up what the book is about. It's about how our fears can overtake us as believer's and can completely rule us.

"My Fury didn't have faces, but if they did, they would all be versions of me, and for the first time I truly understood them for what they were. My self-pity, my anxiousness, my anger, my hopelessness, my judgment, my self-criticism, my worthlessness, my victim-hood, my self-righteousness, my disapproval of others, my fear of being deceived, my need to control any situation, my guilt . . . "

The character's are well crafted and believable as well as the world that was created for them. I think the Dekker's are a great father and daughter duo writing team. I'd love to read another book by them.

Great job, guys!
