Faith 'n Fiction Saturday: The First Christian Fiction Book You Remember Reading

Our question today, from Amy is . . .

We all come to faith in Jesus at different times in our lives and we all come to Christian fiction at different times, too! What's the first book in the Christian fiction genre you can remember reading? What was your impression of it? Did it make you want to read more or less?

In the first question Amy gave us I answered that the Love Comes Softly series by Janette Oke, was my first Christian book, I will give a different book/author for this question, along with a different time period. :-)

I was in my mid twenties attending a large church in San Diego when Frank Peretti's The Present Darkness came out. Our entire Sunday school class which was made up of young marrieds decided to read this book. I will never forget the profound affect this book had on all of us. It was one of those epiphany moments where you've been told that prayer changes things, yet when I read that book the way Peretti formulated it, I GOT IT! Better put, there are the angels and the demons and God's warriors can't work if we're not sending up the prayers. It was a real defining moment in my life. For me, it made me want to read more Christian books like Peretti's, although there weren't a lot like his out at that time. Now, that we have so many authors that write edgy Christian fiction, I have a complete smorgasboard to choose from!

That is awesome! It was my book too! :) I loved This Present Darkness. It totally was the first Christian book that made me stand up and take notice. I unfortunately couldn't find much else that I really liked other than Peircing the Darkness. That has all changed dramatically now though. :) I loved your answer, and not because it matched mine. :)

Oh! Another one for This Present Darkness. It's definitely on my list now!

I've heard such great things about This Present Darkness, but haven't read it yet - it is a favorite of my Dad's.

Oooo, if you like edgy Christian fiction, read The Rook by Stephen James. SUPER read.

Oh yes! I totally forgot about those books, they literally scared me into the importance of prayer. Never read any of the Janette Oke books.

"Edgy Fiction" - I like that. Try "Isolation" by Travis Thrasher - very Stephen King-ish.
