In Feast or Famine (The Egyptian Chronicles #2) by Mesu Andrews

About the book:

Title: In Feast or Famine (The Egyptian Chronicles #2)

Author: Mesu Andrews

Genre: Inspirational Historical Biblical Romantic Fiction

Thrust into an arranged marriage, the daughter of ancient Egypt's high priest plays a pivotal role in Joseph's biblical narrative in this powerful novel from the award-winning author of Potiphar's Wife.

After four-year-old Asenath's mother is murdered by Egypt's foreign rulers, the child is raised to be a priestess by her overprotective father--high priest of Egypt's sun god. For fifteen years, Asenath is sequestered in the upper levels of Ra's temple, convinced it is her destiny to heal the land by becoming queen to the next Egyptian pharaoh. But when Egypt's foreign king instead gives her as a bride to the newly appointed vizier--a Hebrew named Joseph--her entire world is shaken.

Beyond the walls of her tower, Asenath discovers treachery, deceit, and conspiracy that force her to redefine her destiny and weigh where her true loyalties lie. Can she still trust the gods of Egypt? Or is Elohim, the foreign God of her husband, the one who will heal her nation during the feast and famine to come?

My Thoughts

Remember Joseph and his coat of many colors and how his jealous brothers threw him in a pit and then sold him to a band of Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver.

Well, now Joseph is the second in command to Pharaoh and gets pushed into a marriage with Asenath. For these two young adults, things are not going their way. In Ms. Andrew's capable hands, she takes the biblical account of Joseph and gives it life by placing the reader right in Egypt. I felt like I was right there with Joseph and Asenath as this beautiful story unfolded.

The theme of healing was woven throughout the book. For Joseph and his family, Asenath, for Egypt, was beautifully done.

Mesu Andrews is a go-to author for me when it comes to biblical fiction. She never disappoints and you can tell from the first sentence that she has completely and utterly immersed herself in the biblical story. She never tries to outdo the Bible instead she wants to add a story that will draw readers to the actual biblical account.

Potiphar's Wife by Mesu Andrews Reviewed

About the book:

Title: Potiphar's Wife

Author: Mesu Andrews

Genre: Inspirational Biblical Fiction

The drama of the Old Testament comes to life as one of the Bible's most infamous women longs for Joseph, her husband's servant, in this riveting novel from the award-winning author of Isaiah's Legacy.

Before she is Potiphar's wife, Zuleika is a king's daughter on the isle of Crete, where the sisterhood of women rules in the absence of their seafaring husbands. Now that she's come of age, Zuleika knows she will soon be betrothed. Her father believes his robust trade with Egypt will ensure Pharaoh's obligation to marry his daughter.

But Pharaoh refuses and gives her instead to Potiphar, the captain of his bodyguards--a crusty bachelor twice her age, who would rather have a new horse than a Minoan wife.

Abandoned by her father, rejected by Pharaoh, and humiliated by Potiphar's indifference, Zuleika years for affection. But when her obsession with Joseph, the Hebrew chamberlain with the face and body of the gods, goes terribly wrong, she discovers the truth: Only the God of Joseph can heal her wounded heart.

My Thoughts

Once again Ms. Andrews has created a story rich in biblical history and brought the Egyptian country and customs to life in her new book, Potiphar's Wife.

When I think about the story of Joseph in Genesis and Potiphar's wife's actions I don't exactly get all warm and fuzzy but Mesu Andrews gave her skin and showed why she may have behaved and why she did.

Zueleika was both frustrating and endearing if that is even possible. Mesu Andrews knows how to make a reader care about characters and become emotionally invested in the story and she accomplished that with this reader.

Within this story are themes of forgiveness, mercy, kindness, and faith.

My Thoughts

This is my first book by Nancy Naigle and it won't be my last. I love finding new authors to enjoy and this book was amazing!

Having been through the horrors of divorce I could identify with Merry Anna. Once I healed I married a cowboy of my own who introduced me to PBR and the rodeo. This book was like reading a part of my life over the last eleven years.

I also love kids so having Zan show up just added to the fantastic storyline.

The main characters and secondary characters were well-rounded and their struggles were real and believable.

The spiritual thread was present but not overwhelming or preachy. In fact, I really liked the way Ms. Naigle presented the faith element.

I absolutely loved this book and I guarantee if you've never been to a PBR or a rodeo you'll put that on your list.

This is a highly recommended read.

She’s able to live out a beautiful story because God has crowned her with glory—and Azira wants you to do the same!

Young readers will be inspired by this empowering, uplifting reminder to always be and love who God created them to be.

My Thoughts

As a young girl and then a mom of three girls I don't remember that many, or any picture books showing other races other than white. I love how this book beautifully shows this little black girl from birth to adulthood. This story is told from the black girl's perspective and affirms her differences in each aspect of her growing up. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and while I am sure this book will target black families I believe it is a book every family should read and have on their shelves. We are all made in God's image and crowned for His glory.

Dorena Williamson wrote a beautiful book and Shellene Rodney's illustrations enhanced the story.

My Thoughts:
I've been a fan of Mesu Andrews biblical fiction stories since I read Love Amid the Ashes in 2011.
With her impeccable research Mesu Andrews brings the scripture to life. So much so you can feel the emotions and see the setting as if you were sitting in Judah watching everything take place.
As with all biblical fiction I walk away learning something. I didn’t know much about Manasseh prior to reading this book. I liked that Ms. Andrews took creative license with Manasseh giving him autism. It added a unique twist.

This book is a definite must read for all biblical fiction fans!

My Thoughts:

When I was asked to review this book I misunderstood that this was a Bible Study. I don't read a lot if any non-fiction/self-help type books but having read The Friendship's of Women as a young mom and I haven't read anything by Miss Brestin since so I thought I'd give it a try. It's not a bad book, just one I wasn't expecting to read, which is probably my fault.

As a Bible Study, this book is perfect for a MOPS group, a small group, or a ladies group at church. It is broken down weekly with readings, and questions for each day. There are great quotes at the start of each chapter.

Here's a great one: "I have come home at last! This is my real country! I belong here. This is the land I have been looking for all my life, though I never knew it till now. . . Come further up, come further in!" The Unicorn in The Last Battle.

If you're a Narnian you recognize that quote and it's a favorite one of yours too!

If you're apart of a women's ministry group and looking for a Bible Study this fall you might want to give this one a look.

The King's Mercy by Lori Benton - Reviewed

About the book:

Title: The King's Mercy
Author: Lori Benton
Publisher: Waterbrook

For readers of Sara Donati and Diana Gabaldon, this epic historical romance tells of fateful love between an indentured Scotsman and a daughter of the 18th century colonial south.
When captured rebel Scotsman Alex MacKinnon is granted the king's mercy--exile to the Colony of North Carolina--he's indentured to Englishman Edmund Carey as a blacksmith. Against his will Alex is drawn into the struggles of Carey's slaves--and those of his stepdaughter, Joanna Carey. A mistress with a servant's heart, Joanna is expected to wed her father's overseer, Phineas Reeves, but finds herself drawn instead to the new blacksmith. As their unlikely relationship deepens, successive tragedies strike the Careys. When blame falls unfairly upon Alex he flees to the distant mountains where he encounters Reverend Pauling, itinerate preacher and friend of the Careys, now a prisoner of the Cherokees. Haunted by his abandoning of Joanna, Alex tries to settle into life with the Cherokees, until circumstances thwart yet another attempt to forge his freedom and he's faced with the choice that's long hounded him: continue down his rebellious path or embrace the faith of a man like Pauling, whose freedom in Christ no man can steal. But the price of such mercy is total surrender, and perhaps Alex's very life.

About Lori:

Lori Benton was raised east of the Appalachian Mountains, surrounded by early American history going back three hundred years. Her novels transport readers to the eighteenth century, where she brings to life the Colonial and early Federal periods of American history. When she isn't writing, reading, or researching, Lori enjoys exploring and photographing the Oregon wilderness with her husband. She is the author of "Burning Sky," recipient of three Christy Awards, "The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn," Christy-nominee "The Wood's Edge," and "A Flight of Arrows."

My Thoughts:

Lori Benton's latest book is what good inspirational historical fiction is made of. Rich detail that makes you feel like you are right there in colonial North Carolina with Alex MacKinnon as he is begins his indentured life at Severn Plantation.

This story is captivating in all the great ways a good story does. Even with the difficulties the characters struggle to overcome there is hope. The wonderful hope that can only come from our Heavenly Father. The main themes that run through the story like a beautiful woven thread is grace and mercy.

Ms. Benton has written another beautiful story wrapped with grace and mercy. This would be a great addition for any historical fiction fan to add to their summer reading list.

Robin's novels and non-fiction works have received multiple awards and are a favorite with book clubs and study groups. Robin and her husband have a grown son and daughter and live in Hawaii.

My Thoughts:

I am not usually a fan of a book that is released in the spring starting out with a Christmas party. However, I loved how Ms. Gunn started with a favorite things Christmas party. It opened the book perfectly and starting with it gave a great frame to the entire story.

I didn't read any of the Christy Miller series so I wasn't familiar with Christy and Sierra's backstory but I wasn't lost. I love how author's use favored characters in a new series yet they give just enough about them so new reader's aren't in the dark.

Ms. Gunn creates real situations between these character's that made me immediately care about them and want to know more. I enjoyed watching each of them grow in their friendship as they did life together.

Life is messy and this book not only shows the messy stuff, but shows how God turns messes into beauty. This is a great springtime read. I highly recommend it!
