Gianna rounded the corner to her room and was abruptly met
by her mother, who looked less than pleased with her. “Mama, you scared me, is
everything okay? You look upset.” “Yes, I am upset. I have been woken up by
your constant moving about, why are you up and making so much noise?” Gianna
stared at her feet and chewed on her bottom lip, something she did when she was
nervous. “Gianna Louise, what in the world is wrong with you?” “Mama, I don’t
know. I’ve been throwing up since I got home from school, and I have no idea
why.” “Instead of all this back and
forth let’s go downstairs and get you some soda water and see if that settles
your stomach.” Following behind her mother, Gianna walked down the stairs and
into the kitchen. Light streamed in from the street light and moon into the
kitchen giving them enough light to find their way around the large kitchen.
Picking up a glass off of the kitchen counter and the bottle of soda water from
under the counter, opening the bottle her mother poured her a glass. “Here,
drink this. If you are still sick in the morning I’ll take you to see Dr.
Rivera.” Slowly drinking the water she was starting to feel a little better.
She was really tired and just wanted to go to bed. Finishing the water Gianna
put the glass down, looked at her mother, and said “Mama, I am very tired and I
am going to go back to bed.” Her mother nodded and she guided Gianna up the
stairs. Gianna shuffled to her room and collapsed onto her bed and was fast
asleep.
