The Captive Maiden by Melanie Dickerson

In this new fairy tale reimagining from YA author Melanie Dickerson, Gisela's life consists of cooking and cleaning for her stepmother and stepsisters, with little time for daydreams. When she discovers the duke's son, Valten, is in search of a wife, she is determined to get an invitation to his upcoming ball. But once she meets her Prince Charming, other forces are determined to halt her happily ever after.

Melanie has written another gem in her re-told fairy tales series. I am a huge Cinderella fan, and this book was better than any thing I could have imagined. Melanie takes you into the world of jousting, and the mid-evil time period in such a fashion that you don't ever want to leave. I could have read it in a few days, but I wanted to savor it.

Gisela is suffering at the hands of her step-mother, and sisters. When she runs into Valten and realizes that the horse he is riding is one from her father's carefully bred stock she remembers when his father and him came to buy the horse. She was just a young girl and dreamt about Valten. He is aw-struck when he sees her in the marketplace and begins to pursue her. While she is captivated by him, she fears her step-mother's reaction.

This book is a perfect blend of a fairy-tale and the message of salvation. Melanie truly hit the nail on the head with this one. Know that it may be labeled YA but it is a great read no matter the age.

I highly recommend this book!
