    About the Book:

One young woman. Two very different roads. The choice will change everything.

Even as a pregnant, unwed teen in 1974, Sandy Lincoln wanted to do the right thing. But when an ageless woman approached her in a convenience store with a mysterious prophecy and a warning, doing the right thing became even more unclear. She made the best choice she could . . . and has lived with the consequences.

More than thirty years later, a pregnant teen has come into her life, and Sandy’s long-ago decision has come back to haunt her. The stakes rise quickly, leaving Sandy with split seconds to choose once more. But will her choice decision bring life . . . or death?

    My Thoughts:
I chose to review this book because I am adopted. Interestingly enough my adoption took place 8 years prior to when Whitlow has the book taking place. I was a private adoption in 1966 and the adoption process began six months into the pregnancy.
I have mixed feelings about this book. The book takes place in 1974, the height of Roe vs. Wade and what I would consider a much better understanding of teen pregnancy than what was expressed to Sandy. Her mother was more worried about what people would think than how her daughter felt. I was disgusted with her! Funnily enough I also dealt with a teen daughter who got pregnant her senior year. I was recently divorced and she was a senior. It wasn't awful, horrible, it was a mistake. Our kids are suppose to have a soft place to fall and I am glad that if my child was going to make a mistake she could come home to me and not a cold dorm room!

At the beginning of her senior year Sandy finds out she is pregnant, her mother freaks out, her boyfriend and his family want her to abort the baby, her parents decision is to send her to live with her Aunt Linda. On the way to her Aunt's house in Atlanta she stops at a convenience store and an old lady tells her she is going to have twins and that she needs to separate them at birth because if they ever meet one of them is going to die. Sandy is totally freaked out by this but is determined to separate the twins when they are born.

Sandy has NO CHOICE in what is going on with her or her baby. She is sent to live with her Aunt Linda who has her read Roe vs. Wade and write an essay on it. What is worse Aunt Linda picks out the adoption agency that Sandy uses and the choices of parents for Sandy to choose from.

And even when Sandy goes to choose parents for the twins she is going to have, Linda has a problem with different things. For example, one of the potential parents the husband is a pilot and will be gone a lot so she says Sandy shouldn't choose them because he wouldn't be a contributing father. Really???? So I guess military husbands are bad parents too. NOT! My dad was active duty and rocked as a dad!

As the book progresses both Linda and her parents are better at accepting of Sandy's pregnancy and the birth of the babies.

When Sandy becomes an adult, is teaching high school and coaching cheer-leading a girl at the school becomes pregnant. The school has it set up that the counselor is to work with the student yet the young girl feels more comfortable talking with Sandy. This ignites a fire storm that will ultimately bring about the prophecy from the convenience store.

This was my first read of Robert Whitlow's. I enjoyed it. As an adoptee there were a lot of things that I just didn't agree with. I thought Sandy needed to have her own choice on what she should do, whether to go and stay with her Aunt or not. It felt like a lot of what Sandy did was because she felt she had to not because she wanted to. Also, if you aren't adopted I don't believe you could truly understand the depth of this book or what Sandy went through. Just my .02
