WIN INTO THE BEAUTIFUL NORTH

Monday, June 7, 2010

Nineteen-year-old Nayeli works at a taco shop in her Mexican village and dreams about her father, who journeyed to the US when she was young. Recently, it has dawned on her that he isn't the only man who has left town. In fact, there are almost no men in the village--they've all gone north. While watching The Magnificent Seven, Nayeli decides to go north herself and recruit seven men--her own "Siete MagnĂficos"--to repopulate her hometown and protect it from the bandidos who plan on taking it over.

Filled with unforgettable characters and prose as radiant as the Sinaloan sun, Into the Beautiful North is the story of an irresistible young woman's quest to find herself on both sides of the fence.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Dowryless and desperate, Tressa Neill applies to the inaugural class of Wyatt Herdsman School in Barnett, Kansas, in 1888. The school's one-of-a-kind program teaches young women from the East the skills needed to become a rancher--or the wife of one.

Shy and small for her twenty-two years, Tressa is convinced she'll never have what it takes to survive Hattie Wyatt's hands-on instruction in skills such as milking a cow, branding a calf, riding a horse, and cooking up a mess of grub for hungry ranch hands. But what other options does she have?

Abel Samms wants nothing to do with the group of potential brides his neighbor brought to town. He was smitten with an eastern girl once--and he got his heart broken. But there's something about quiet Tressa and her bumbling ways that makes him take notice.

When Tressa's life is endangered, will Abel risk his own life--and his heart--to help this eastern girl?

My Review: What a delightful book! Hattie asked the guys in the town of Barnett, KS what they were looking for in a wife, then she went out and found young ladies to bring to the town to "groom" into ranchers wives. These young ladies are from NY and know nothing about how to work the land, they've been pampered etc. Tressa came because she has no dowry and figures it's the only way she'll get a husband. When the women arrive the men are all lined up like prancing peacocks waiting to see what pretty young things arrived on the train. During the disembarkment the girls got caught up in each other's skirts and some of the guys were not so nice. This caught Abel's attention. While he has no intention of getting married, one girl stood out and how long will it take for him to allow her in? That is the question!
I highly recommend this book! This will make a great summer read!
